How I started studying Spanish

In December I was in Las Vegas for my company's end of year convention.

En Diciembre estuve en Las Vegas para la convención de fin de año de mi compañía.

There was a big expo with a lot of different booths.

Hubo una gran exposición con un montón de diferentes puestos.

I work in the training and education department.

Yo trabajo en el departamento de entrenamiento y educación.

At my booth we had a game show where contestants could answer questions about the products and win prizes.

En mi puesto teníamos un juego donde los concursantes podían responder preguntas sobre los productos y ganar premios.

My game was called Training Knock out.

Mi juego se llamaba Nocaut de Entrenamiento.

Right next to my booth, we had another game show with a big wheel like wheel of fortune.

Justo al lado de mi puesto, teníamos otro juego en exhibición con una gran rueda como la rueda de la fortuna.

In the US we have a lot of Latino sales reps.

En los Estados Unidos tenemos muchos representantes de ventas latinos.

Spanish speaking sales reps are doing really well in the business.

Los representantes de ventas que hablan español están teniendo muy buenos resultados en el negocio.

So we had a bilingual MC for both game shows.

Así que teníamos un maestro de ceremonias bilingüe para ambos juegos.

There was usually a big line of people waiting to play the game.

Usualmente había una larga línea de gente esperando para poder jugar.

If an English speaking sales rep came up, he asked them the question in English.

Si un representante de ventas que hablara ingles venía, el les preguntaba en ingles.

If a Spanish speaking sales rep came up he asked them the question in Spanish.

Si un representante de ventas que hablara español venía, el les preguntaba en español.

At some point, I can't remember why, he had to go somewhere.

En un momento, no recuerdo porque, el tuvo que ir a algún lado.

My coworker and I were working behind the booth sorting out the prizes.

Mi compañera y yo estábamos detrás del puesto organizando los premios.

When he left my co-worker went to the front and took the microphone.

Cuando él se fue, mi compañera fue al frente y tomo el micrófono.

Then a spanish speaking client walked up and she panicked and ran back to me behind the booth.

Entonces un cliente que hablaba español se acercó y ella entro en pánico y corrió a buscarme detrás del puesto.

We had all the questions and answers written on white cards in both Spanish and English.

Teníamos todas las preguntas y respuestas escritas en tarjetas blancas tanto en ingles como en español.

Even though I can't speak Spanish, I can pronounce it really well.

Aunque no puedo hablar español, puedo pronunciarlo bastante bien.

So I decided to just go to the front and at least read the questions to the people in line.

Así que decidí ir al frente y al menos leer las preguntas a las personas en la línea.

I did that in pretty near perfect Spanish, but there was just one problem.

Lo hice en un español casi perfecto, pero había solo un problema.

Whenever a customer tried to say something back to me in Spanish I didn't have a clue what they were saying!

All I could do was read the correct answer! I couldn't have a conversation with them!

¡Todo lo que podía hacer era leer la respuesta correcta! ¡No podía tener una conversación con ellos!

So I would just hand them a prize and move on to the next person.

Así que solo les daba un premio y proseguía con el siguiente.

I had to do this twice when the MC Left to go do something.

Tuve que hacerlo dos veces cuando el maestro de ceremonias salió a hacer algo.

After the second time I took a break.

Después de la segunda vez tome un descanso.

I was walking back towards the booth thinking, "You're crazy! What do you think you're doing. You're reading Spanish to people and you don't even speak Spanish. This is insane!

Estaba caminando de regreso al puesto cuando pensé "¡Estás loco! Qué crees que haces. ¡Le estás leyendo en español a personas y ni siquiera hablas español! ¡Esto es una locura!"

Just when I was thinking this, My boss came up to me and said, "They lost their bilingual MC over at the wheel of fortune booth, can you go over and help them and read the questions in Spanish?"

Justo cuando estaba pensando esto, mi jefa se me acerca y me dice, "Perdieron a su maestro de ceremonias bilingüe en el puesto de la rueda de la fortuna, ¿puedes ir ahí y ayudarlos leyendo las preguntas en español?"

So when I was thinking, "This is crazy, my boss didn't think so at all.

All she wanted to do was keep the line moving and keep the game going.

Todo lo que ella quería era que la línea siguiera en movimiento y el juego se mantuviera vivo.

So I went over to the other booth and read the questions and answers in Spanish .

So after that trip I decided to learn to speak Spanish.

The next time somebody needs me to speak Spanish, I want to be ready.
